Late afternoon at approximately 3:50 PM, a confirmed tornado was racing to the northeast, on a track directly towards Jacksboro, TX. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service put a tornado warning out for this storm, soon to be upgraded to a PDS (Particularly Dangerous Situation) warning as it began causing significant damage within the city. Many photos, videos and reports were submitted after the tornado caused significant damage to the city of Jacksboro. One unsettling image that came out of Jacksboro was damage from Jacksboro High School, which sustained some rather significant damage. As seen in this photo, the roof of the high school was wiped out from the tornado that moved directly through the area, to no surprise, this area happened to see some of the more significant damage. Thankfully, a school spokesperson did confirm that students and staff are all ok, and no one was injured. This tornado also damaged an animal shelter and Jacksboro Elementary School. More unsettling images coming out of Jacksboro showing the extensive damage done to buildings and homes. It is estimated that 60-80 homes were damaged. First responders had to rescue a few people from their homes today, but luckily no one was severely injured. For reference, Jacksboro is located approximately 60 miles northwest of Fort Worth. US281 remains closed due to downed power lines and debris.
We expect to have a lot more information on the exact damage path, wind speeds, damage rating, and full extent of the damage once the National Weather Service conducts a damage survey and determines the details.
