North Texas is due for a big snowstorm. It has been over 5 years since we've seen any measurable snowfall in most of DFW, excluding Northwestern DFW. So, when could we see a snowstorm in DFW?
We have reason to think it'll be in Early 2021. Many long-term models (that scale out 30-45 days) like the CFS have shown 3 different chances in January of a snowstorm. The European/Canadian Models both suggest a possible severe weather outbreak on New Years Eve, transitioning into a potential brief snow overnight. Keep in mind, DFW usually sees a snowstorm every 5-7 years. The last 'snowstorm' was in March of 2015, which most areas only received a coating of snow. The last actual snowstorm in DFW was February 3rd & 4th of 2011, which Dallas Love Field measured 5 inches, and some of the most impacted areas saw anywhere from 7 to 8 inches. There was a total of 9 different snowstorms or ice events between 2008 to 2011. There has been only 2 notable ones ever since. The last time Denton County saw any measurable snowfall was actually quite recently, but it wasn't a full-on snowstorm. We saw anywhere from 1-4 inches of snow in Northwestern DFW on January 11th, 2020. Argyle recorded 1.7 inches of snow. The snow was all melted by the afternoon, but it was a spectacular event for everyone to see. The CFS suggests snowfall could be possible either in Early or Mid January. January into Early February tends to have the best chance for snow in North Texas.
